Order of Christian Initiation of Children

General Information

In the Catholic Church, OCIC, or Order of Christian Initiation of Children, is the process by which children, aged 7-17, are prepared to become full members of the Church. It mirrors the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) but is adapted for a younger age group. This process is for children who have not been baptized, those baptized in another Christian tradition, or older children (exact ages vary) who were baptized Catholic but have not yet received First Communion and/or Confirmation.

Families with a child under the age of 7 who has not been baptized participate in standard baptism preparation. Further information is available on the main parish website by clicking below.

Baptism Information (for children under 7)

What does the process involve?

The process involves catechesis, prayer, participation in the life of the Church, and preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist (First Communion). In many cases, OCIC runs through our Faith Formation program (September to May), but it also takes an individualized approach, recognizing that children come from various backgrounds and may need varying levels of support.

Why might OCIC be needed?

Some children may not have been baptized as infants, while others may be baptized in another Christian tradition or were baptized Catholic but delayed in receiving the sacraments of initiation.

What does parent/family involvement look like?

Parents or guardians are actively involved in the OCIC process, as they play a vital role in their child's faith formation. This "family based" approach mirrors that of our Faith Formation program.

When would my child receive the sacraments?

It is most common for children and adults who have completed the OCIC and OCIA process to receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass. However, another time can be arranged based on the family's desire. We've welcomed children and adults into the Church on Easter Sunday morning, Pentecost, and more!
